The Femur

The page starts with an anterior view of the right femur. The proximal end is to your left and the distal end to your right.

Rotate the model. Try to find all the landmarks listed below. The colored plus buttons will show you labeled femurs for those regions. Note, the anterior view is a left femur. Sorry.

  • Gluteal Tuberosity - Rough triangle on the posterior proximal side of the shaft. The base is the intertrochanter line and the apex the linea aspera.
  • Greater trochanter - On the lateral side of the proximal epiphysis.
  • Fofea Capitas - Round pit on the medial surface of the head.
  • Head - large round structure pointing medially on the proximal end.
  • Intertrochanter line - Line between two trochanters on the posterior side.
  • Lateral and Medial condyles - Paired round structures facing to the posterior on the distal diaphysis.
  • Lateral and medial epicondyles - Round projections on the sides of the condyles.
  • Lesser Trochanter - On the posterior side of the proximal epiphysis.
  • Linea Aspera - Rough line running from gluteal tuberosity down the proximal side of the diaphysis.
  • Neck - Connects the head to the shaft.
  • Patellar surface - Smooth surface on the anterior side of the distal epiphysis.
