On this page are the urogenital models which consist of the urinary system and male reproductive system and female reproductive system. They are included together becasue the structures are interrelated. Watch the videos then rotate the models to find the structures.

There are 3 regions of the kidneys. From superficial to deep, they are the cortex, medullary pyramids, and the renal sinus. Between the medullary pyramids are renal columns that allow interlobar vessels to pass between pyramids. Urine is formed in nephrons which drain into renal papilla found at the base of the renal pyramids.

The renal papilla drain into minor and major calyxes and finally into the renal pelvis. These structures are all found within the renal sinus. The pelvis drains into the ureter. As you rotate the kidney, try to find the hilum. I have a thing for hilums.

Blood enters through the renal artery which splits into segmental arteries in the renal sinus. The segmental arteries branch into interlobar arteries in the renal columns which in turn branch into arcuate arteries that are found above the medullary pyramids. Interlobular arteries emerge from the arcuate arteries to bring blood to nephrons. Blood exits in reverse order and goes out the renal vein.

Urinary System Overview

Urine is formed in nephrons which drain into renal papilla found at the base of the renal pyramids. The renal papilla drain into minor and major calyxes (48) and finally into the renal pelvis. From there, the renal pelvis drains into the ureters which travel down the abdominal wall to the urinary bladder. The ureters, and therefore urine, enters the posterior side of the urinary bladder in a region superior and lateral to the urethra. Note the smooth trigone between the 3 openings. This bladder is from a male because it as a prostate gland and seminal vesicles.
