Simple Squamous Epithelium

Simple squamous epithelium is made of a thin layer of flat cells which are loosely bound together. As illustrated in the picture to the right, the cells are extremely flat with a rounded nucleus typically in the center. Simple squamous epithelium is found lining the lungs, in structures called alveoli, and in most blood vessels. It is also found in parts of the kidney. The small size of the cell allows substances to diffuse through quickly. The base is attached to the basement membrane. Simple squamous epithelium is also lining blood vessels and parts of kidney tubules.

Slides on this page were made by students between the spring of 2018 and the spring of 2020. Go through the diffrent student pictures and compare them to your lab book picture. The last 2 are of a vein. The pointer is pointing to the squamous cell. Select 1 slide to draw on paper.
