Human Anatomy Histology

Muscle Tissue Histology

Muscle tissue is a tissue type that is excitable and contracts. There are 3 types of muscle tissue and we will look at all 3 in lab 9. For this lab, we will look at skeletal muscle to observe the cells.

Skeltal muscle has long cells that are called fibers. The cells are packed with protein fibers and as a result, the oval shaped nuclei are forced to the outside of the cell. During development, multiple myoblasts, muscle stem cells, merge together and as a result 1 skeletal muscle cells will have many nuclei. Lastly, because the cells are so elongated, they are often refered to as muscle fibers instead of muscle cells.

The pictures on this page were taken by my anatonmy students in the spring and fall of 2023 as part of a larger project.
