Cilia

A cellular projection is a structure, that, as the name implies, projects or sticks out of the main part of the cell. If you have already viewed the nerve cells, you will have noted that there were long thin projections that reached out of the cell body of those cells.

Epithelial tissue can have 1 of 2 types of projections. The first type of projection are called cilia. These are hair like structures that will move substances such as mucus across the apex of the cell. Unlike microvilli, the other epithelial cell projection, cilia can normally be focused on in the microscope and unlike the flagella of sperm, cilia come in large numbers.

The pictures on this page were taken by my anatonmy students in the spring and fall of 2023 as part of a larger project.
