Muscle Tissue Histology

Muscle tissue is excitable and contractile. There are 3 types of muscle tissue. Skeletal muscle is voluntary and has long parallel cells. Cardiac muscle is involuntary and has short branched cells. Both of these types have a visible banding pattern called striations. Smooth muscle gets its name because it lacks striations. The cells are short tapered (fusiform) cells. We will look at the 3 types of muscle tissue. In addition, we will look at the connective tissue surrounding skeletal muscle and the neuro-motor junction of skeletal muscle.
